Do Yourself a Favour – Volunteer!

Joanna's office

Life is busy.  Life is hectic.  Life is unpredictable.

Many of us feel these things from time to time, some of us feel it every day.  The single best thing I did to take time for myself, was to volunteer.  Blogging for this wonderful organization gives me the opportunity, every few weeks, to take a moment and think about things that are important to me…just me – not my kids, my customers, my family, friends or co-workers.

Developmental disability is a topic close to my heart because my brother has Down syndrome.  When I sit down to write, it gives me a moment to reflect on our life together.  I also think about other people I have met that are like him, the people who have supported him and my parents raising him.  Mainly I think about the moments we have had as a family (camping, pets, our love of sports, the neighbours, who were like family, who love Jeff), things I never focus on a daily basis.  What it also gives me time for, is to be grateful for this journey we have had.

Volunteering introduces you to people you may never have met, events you may never have gone to and develop skills you never knew you had.  It is a way to give back to the things that mean most to you.
