Honour Human Rights and Freedoms

We Value our Rights and Freedoms.

We all have dreams that we wish to fulfill. We have talents and abilities that we aspire to develop. We work hard and appreciate being recognized for our efforts. We all have the need to socialize, to enjoy activities with friends, to belong. We make our own decisions and value our independence. Yet, none of us would be able to survive alone, and we all need support at some point in our lives. We are all human and have the right to be full citizens in our community.

In fact, in Canada, this humanistic premise is mandated for all Canadians under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability.

A Different Reality for Some

Unfortunately, all too often, persons with disabilities experience a different reality. In this technological era where information is disseminated at the speed of light all over the world, societal preconceptions persist and persons with disabilities continue to be marginalized in many ways.

At Semiahmoo House Society, we believe that inclusion is for everyone and we support this philosophy in our community. We design programs that enhance the lives of persons with developmental disabilities and facilitate their inclusion in society.

The Recreation and Leisure Program

Our Recreation and Leisure Program offers a wide range of activities adapted to the unique needs of participants. Many people we support and their families have credited our Recreation and Leisure Program for promoting personal development and friendships.
The program has become a very important component in the lives of the people we support. It offers opportunities to learn, grow and travel; to gain self-confidence and increase independence; and to participate in the same activities as other members of our community do. Families and care givers feel confident, knowing that their loved ones are participating in a program that is safe and inclusive.

This is not a government funded program. The Recreation and Leisure program relies solely on modest participation fees and your generous donations. The program has the potential of reaching out to many others in our community with your continued support.
